Un’altra bellissima rubrica nasce sul nostro blog! Questa volta si tratta di scoprire la persona che si cela dietro a un libro, o una serie di libri, che tanto amiamo.
Noi dello staff Romance Book abbiamo deciso di intervistare delle autrici straniere i cui libri sono stati già tradotti in Italia, e autrici ancora inedite, con la speranza che qualche casa editrice decida di portarle presto nel nostro Paese.

La prima autrice che abbiamo intervistato è K.K. Allen, autrice di “Under the Bleachers”, “Waterfall Effect” e molto altro. Sfortunatamente ancora inediti in Italia, ma che noi del blog abbiamo letto e amato immensamente.

Sfortunatamente, non tutti i lettori italiani ti conoscono. Come ti descriveresti come autrice e come descriveresti la tua scrittura?

Ciao! Grazie per avermelo chiesto. Vorrei dirvi quanto sogno che i miei romanzi vengano tradotti in italiano in modo che i lettori possano goderseli. Descriverei la mia scrittura come lirica e ricca di emozioni. Pongo molta attenzione, non solo sui dettagli delle mie storie, ma come pronuncio le mie parole in modo da evocare tutti i sentimenti che vorrei che i miei lettori provino.

Not all Italian readers know you, unfortunately. How would you describe yourself as an author and how would you describe your writing style?

Hi! Thank you for asking. I just want to tell you how much of a dream it is of mine to have my books translated so all Italian romance readers can enjoy them. I would describe my writing style as lyrical and rich with emotion. I pay a lot of attention to, not just the details of my stories, but how I phrase my words so that it evokes all the feeling I want my readers to feel. 

Il libro “Waterfall Effect” è differente dagli altri tuoi romanzi, come ti è venuta l’idea?

“Waterfall Effect” è differente! Mi piace chiamarlo il mio romanzo filosofico, perchè il termine “Effetto cascata” è una filosofia della psicologia di Aurora (la protagonista del libro) usata per descrivere la sua condizione. Ho avuto l’idea di creare questa filosofia dal “mito della caverna” tratto dal libro “La Repubblica” di Platone. È una storia sulla percezione umana basata su tre prigionieri intrappolati in una caverna buia per così tanto tempo che il loro credo è basato solamente sulla conoscenza sensoriale. Fino a quando un prigioniero viene condotto all’estero e viene portato alla luce. È una storia di illuminazione e sul valore della conoscenza che è basata sulla ragione filosofica verso l’opinione.

Amo tantissimo questa storia, e mi è rimasta impressa fin dall’università. Ho iniziato a plasmare la storia di Aurora e Jaxon dal punto di vista di come ci sono così tante idee sbagliate sulla salute mentale là fuori, e ci sono conseguenze molto pericolose nel farlo.

È anche un bellissimo romanzo sulle seconde opportunità! Haha. Non tutto così serio. Ma grazie per aver posto questa domanda. Adoro parlare di questo libro.

Waterfall Effect is a bit different from your other novels, how did the idea come out?

Waterfall Effect is a bit different! I like to call it my philosophical romance, because the term “Waterfall Effect” is a philosophy Aurora’s psychologist uses to describe her condition. I actually got the idea to create this philosophy from “Allegory of the Cave” from Plato’s Republic. It’s a story about human perception based on three prisoners who have been trapped in a dark cave for so long that their beliefs are based on only sensory knowledge. Until one prisoner is led outside and is introduced to the sunlight. It’s a story of enlightenment and the value of knowledge that’s based on philosophical reasoning versus opinion. 

I love that story so much, and it’s stuck with me since college. I started to shape Aurora and Jaxon’s story from the perspective of how there are so many misconceptions of mental health out there, and there are very dangerous consequences to doing so.

It’s also a very beautiful second chance romance! Haha. Not all so serious. But thank you for asking that question. I love talking about this book.

A quale protagonista sei più legata e in quale rivedi di più te stessa?

Direi “Center of Gravity” è un libro in cui posso rivedermi quando ballavo da giovane. Volevo disperatamente scrivere un libro ambientato in uno studio di danza incentrato sulla danza moderna e contemporanea. Ad essere sincera, ero terrorizzata ad impegnarmi in questa idea. La danza è una cosa difficile da spiegare. Ma ricordo quanto erano divertenti le lezioni di danza e la comunità affiatata che condividevamo tutti. Ricordo anche l’intensa competitività e il sentirsi come una novizia in una stanza con ballerini più esperti. Volevo portare tutto ciò in “Center of Gravity.” Aggiungi una storia d’amore proibita con un coreografo ed è il mio bestseller più grande fino ad oggi!

Which one of your characters are you most attached to and which one do you most reflect yourself in?

I would say Center of Gravity is a book I can relate to the most since I was a dancer growing up. I desperately wanted to write a book based in a dance studio that focused on modern and contemporary styles of dance. To be honest, I was terrified to commit to the idea. Dance is a hard thing to explain. But I remember how much fun dance classes were and the tightknit community we all shared. I also remember the intense competitiveness involved and feeling like such a novice in a room with more seasoned dancers. I wanted to bring all of that into Center of Gravity. Add in a forbidden romance with a choreographer and it’s now my biggest bestseller to date!

Sfortunatamente i tuoi romanzi ancora non sono stati tradotti in italiano, ma quale vorresti che i lettori italiani leggessero per primo?

Tutti! Ma se devo scegliere  direi “Up in the Treehouse”, “Center of gravity” o ” Waterfall Effect”. Ognuno è un primo libro di una serie o uno standalone.

Unfortunately your books haven’t been translated to Italian yet, but which one would you like for Italian readers to read first?

All of them! But if I have to choose, I would say Up in the Treehouse, Center of Gravity, or Waterfall Effect. Each of those is either a first in a series and a standalone. 

Quale libro è stato più difficile da scrivere?

Waterfall Effect è stato il più difficile da scrivere per molte ragioni. Per prima cosa, il contenuto è molto pesante, e le ricerche coinvolte sono state faticose per il mio cuore e per la mia anima. Ma ragazzi, ne è valsa la pena! Secondo motivo, è il libro più lungo che ho mai scritto con oltre 120000 parole. Terzo, avevo paura. Mi è venuta l’idea di “Waterfall effect” nello stesso periodo in cui ho avuto l’idea di “Up in the Treehouse” e non mi pento di nulla. Penso che avessi bisogno di alcune uscite all’attivo prima di affrontare qualcosa di così pesante.

Which book was the most difficult to write?

Waterfall Effect was the most difficult to write for so many reasons. One, the content was very heavy, and the research involved was taxing on my heart and soul. But man, was it worth it! Two, it is the longest book I’ve ever written at over 120,000 words. Three, I was afraid of it. I came up with the idea for Waterfall Effect around the same time I got the idea for Up in the Treehouse and I don’t regret a thing. I think I needed to get a few releases under my built before I tackled something so heavy. 

Quale libro consiglieresti di leggere a un lettore che non ha mai letto nulla di tuo?

Sono una lettrice umorale, quindi mi piace offrire suggerimenti basati sull’umore. Se vuoi qualcosa di angosciante, emotivo, bello e sincero, inizierei al cento per cento con Up in the Treehouse. Se stai cercando una storia d’amore spigolosa con suspense, allora Waterfall Effect è quello che fa per te. Se vuoi qualcosa di un po’ più leggero, con qualche commedia e sportivo, vai con Center of Gravity. E se vuoi qualcosa di super avvincente, frenetico e sexy, scegli Dangerous Hearts.

Which book would you recommend to a reader who has never read anything from you?

I am a mood reader, so I like to offer suggestions based on mood. If you want something angsty, emotional, beautiful, and heartfelt, I would one hundred percent start with “Up in the Treehouse”. If you’re looking for an edgy romance with suspense, then “Waterfall Effect” is the one for you. If you want something a bit lighter, with some comedy, and sporty, then go with “Center of Gravity”. And if you want something super addicting, fast-paced, and sexy, go with Dangerous Hearts. 

Scrivi storie di vario genere, dal romance al fantasy, ma a quale sei più legata?

Sono decisamente più affezionata al New Adult, ai romanzi su ragazzi che stanno per raggiungere la maggiore età con una perfetta dose di angoscia. Adoro scrivere storie d’amore che “catturino il limite dell’innocenza”. Sai, quel posto bello, confuso e disordinato nella vita quando stai emergendo nell’età adulta e stai cercando di capire la tua vita? Mi piace definirlo il mio punto debole (occhiolino) e adoro approfondire la mente del mio personaggio durante quel periodo di crescita. Sia che stiano cercando di capire quale potrebbe essere la carriera dei loro sogni, sia che stiano cercando di riprendersi da qualcosa nel loro passato che li perseguita, adoro tenerli per mano e aiutarli nel loro viaggio e verso un bellissimo lieto fine.

A proposito di lieto fine, non è mai un viaggio facile nei miei libri, ma te lo prometto, ne vale sempre la pena. Ho messo i miei personaggi in subbuglio, non mentirò, perché credo davvero che non puoi essere felice con qualcun altro se non sei veramente felice con te stesso. Adoro vedere le mie coppie crescere sia come individui sia insieme. Adoro l’accumulo che alla fine porta a una sorta di svolta quando i miei personaggi non riescono a trattenere il desiderio reciproco. E adoro la soddisfazione che provo quando le mie coppie finalmente ottengono il loro meritato e vissero felici e contenti.

You write various kinds of stories, from romance to fantasy, but which one are you most attached to?

I am definitely most attached to new adult, coming of age romance with a perfect dose of angst. I love to write romance stories that “captures the edge of innocence.” You know that beautiful, confusing, and messy place in life when you’re emerging into adulthood and you’re trying to figure out your life? I like to call that my sweet spot (wink) and I love delving into my character’s psyches during that time of growth. Whether they are trying to figure out what their dream career might be, or whether they are trying to move on from something in their past that haunts them, I love to hold their hand and help them through their journey and toward a beautiful HEA! 

Speaking of HEAs, it’s never an easy journey in my books, but I promise you, it’s always worth it. I put my characters through some turmoil, I’m not going to lie, because I truly believe you can’t be happy with someone else if you aren’t truly happy with yourself. I love seeing my couples grow as individuals as well as together. I love the build-up that eventually leads to some sort of breakthrough when my characters can’t hold back their desire for each other. And I love the satisfaction I feel when my couples finally getting their much-deserved happily ever afters.

Diventare una scrittrice è sempre stato il tuo sogno?

Scrivere a tempo pieno è il mio sogno più grande in assoluto. Qualcuno una volta mi ha detto che ciò a cui sei appassionato da bambino potrebbe essere la carriera dei tuoi sogni quando invecchi. Per me quel sentimento è assolutamente vero. Stavo insegnando a me stessa come scrivere quando avevo otto anni mentre giocavo con la vecchia macchina da scrivere di mia madre. Ho scritto il mio primo romanzo completo all’età di dodici anni. E ho iniziato a scrivere con il sogno di pubblicare dopo aver incontrato Nicholas Sparks al college. Ora sto pubblicando sul serio ed è il mio lavoro a tempo pieno. Sono molto grata per l’opportunità di godermi il lavoro ogni giorno.

Has becoming a writer always been a dream of yours?

Writing full time is my absolute biggest dream. Someone once told me that what you are passionate about as a child could be your dream career when you get older. For me, that sentiment is absolutely true. I was teaching myself how to type when I was eight years old while messing around on my mom’s old typewriter. I wrote my first full novel at the age of twelve. And I started writing with the dream of publishing after meeting Nicholas Sparks in college. Now, I’m publishing for real and it’s my full-time job. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to enjoy going to work every single day.

C’è un genere che non hai ancora scritto ma che vorresti scrivere?

Ho sempre voluto scrivere un libro di saggistica. Accadrà un giorno.

Is there a trope you haven’t written yet, but that you’d like to write?

I’ve always wanted to write a non-fiction book. It will happen one day.

Stai lavorando ad un nuovo libro? Puoi anticiparci qualcosa?

Sto lavorando a un nuovo libro, sì. In effetti, mi sono svegliata alle 2 del mattino pensandoci e invece di tornare a letto sono scesa al computer e ho iniziato a scrivere. Tutto quello che posso dire ora è che sto tornando indietro nella direzione di Waterfall Effect. Suspense romantica, piccola città, vibrazioni romantiche di seconde possibilità.

Are you working on a new book? Can you anticipate something about it?

I am working on a new book, yes. In fact, I woke up at 2am thinking about it and instead of going back to bed I walked downstairs to my computer and started typing. All I can say now is that I’m veering back in the direction of Waterfall Effect. Romantic suspense, small town, second chance romance vibes.

Questa è la domanda più difficile per me. I primi libri che mi vengono sempre in mente sono “A Walk to Remember” di Nicholas Sparks, “Remember Me” di Sophie Kinsella, “Firefly Lane” di Kristin Hannah, “Twilight” di Stephanie Meyer e “Whispers from the Grave” di Leslie Rule. Tutti generi di libri completamente diversi.

Which is your all-time favorite book?

This is the hardest question for me. The first books that always come to mind are “A Walk to Remember” by Nicholas Sparks, “Remember Me” by Sophie Kinsella, “Firefly Lane” by Kristin Hannah, “Twilight” by Stephanie Meyer, and “Whispers from the Grave” by Leslie Rule. All completely different types of books.

Qual è stato il primo romanzo che ti ha fatto innamorare del romance?

“A Walk to Remember” è il motivo per cui mi sono innamorata delle “storie d’amore”, non necessariamente del romanticismo. Ma direi che “Ugly Love” di Colleen Hoover mi ha fatta innamorare non solo del romanticismo, ma anche del mondo New Adult.

What was the first book you read that made you fall in love with romance?

“A Walk to Remember” is how I fell in love with “love stories,” not necessarily romance. But I would say “Ugly Love” by Colleen Hoover made me fall in love with not only romance, but the New Adult world too. 

C’è qualche tuo libro basato su fatti o persone reali? Se sì, quale?

Tutto ciò che scrivo è ispirato da esperienze e da persone della mia vita. Piccoli manierismi a cui assisto, luoghi in cui ho viaggiato, storie che ho ascoltato e persino quelle che ho letto a mio figlio, e persino il dolore che ho vissuto nell’amore e nella vita. Mi viene tutto nel cervello e vortica lì intorno fino a quando non esce una storia. Ogni tanto mia mamma legge qualcosa nei miei libri e ricevo un suo messaggio di testo che mi fa notare qualcosa. C’è una scena in Through the Lens in cui Maggie rifiuta di cucinare un’aragosta viva. In realtà si basava su una storia divertente che mia madre mi raccontava di un corso di cucina a cui aveva partecipato.

Is anyone of your books inspired by true facts or real people? If yes, which one is it?

Everything I write is inspired by experiences and the people in my life. Little mannerisms I witness, places I’ve traveled to, stories I’ve heard and even the ones I read to my son, and even the pain I’ve gone through in love and life. It all goes into my brain and swirls around there until a nugget of a story pops out. Every now and then my mom will read something in my books and I’ll get a text message that points something out. There’s a scene in Through the Lens where Maggie refuses to cook a live lobster. That was actually based on a funny story my mom told me about a cooking class she’d attended.
